Only about half of all types of fungi are harmful. Fungal infections in humans usually begin in the lungs or on the surface of the skin. Fungi are evolutionary more closely related to animals than to plants but this was not recognized until a few decaded ago.
Different types of fungi:
Dermatophytes=fungi having to do with skin.
Examples are:
-Tinea= fungal infection of the hair, skin, or nails. When tinea affects the skin, there is a small red area the size of a pea. This area grows and spreads out in a shape of a circle or a ring. Tinea is often called ringworm because it looks like there are worms under the skin, even though there are not.
- Athlete's foot=a fungal infection that appears between the toes, causing the skin to be flaky and itchy. Athlete's foot is transmitted in moist areas and can be caught when walking on moist surfaces such as, shower floors.
Candida= yeast fungus that affects the mouth, throat, skin, scalp, fingers, lung, and nails.
Stachybotrys Chartarum=a common outdoor mold but becomes a problem when it is indoors. When stachybotrys chartarum is indoors, people can inhale spores in the air at large doses, causing flu-like symptoms.
Poisonous Mushrooms= some can lead to kidney failure and death while others just cause upset stomach and diarrhea.
